Childrey 5k and 10k Fun Run

The time has come to start thinking about the Childrey 10k; the course, the organisation and the entries.

This year it am hoping that we will be able to go bigger and better with the addition of a 5k and – hopefully – widening the entry field to include all the enthusiastic teenagers in the village.

I've received quite a bit of lobbying to keep the 10k course as it has been for the last couple of years. It is nice to get everyone off on the trails and away from the roads. It's also nice that it gets us up and down a few hills which – given where we live – is pretty much inevitable. Ideally I'd like to get everyone up onto The Ridgeway but the only ways I can see of doing that involve routes that will be longer than 10k... or Gramp's Hill.

The 5k actually presents a bigger challenge. I want to create a course that will be suitable for the less experienced runner (flat, not muddy), won't require an army of marshalls (clearly marked footpaths) and will be suitable for younger runners (not roads). It feels like one of those "I wouldn't set off from here if I were you" situations.

On the plus side, Lucy has kindly offered to help out with organisation and I'm looking at the Olympic Legacy outfit to see if we can get some help with insurance advice and other admin and organisation tasks. All I need now is to find a likely business to sponsor the medals and trophies because if we do expand the field the costs are going to ratchet up a bit.
